What's a Seed Swap?
Basically, a seed swap is a place to donate your extra seeds and pick up seeds that others have donated. Imagine a table, with dozens of packets of seeds on it. That's about it.Gardeners are invited to bring their seeds— hand-collected, open-pollenated, heirloom, or commercial "leftovers"— to Seedy Saturday. There will be a trading table for you to leave and take seeds.
If you don't have seeds to trade, you may take a few packages and "pay" with a donation to Seeds of Diversity.
* Visit the Seeds of Diversity web site to learn more about heritage seed saving.
Trading Etiquette
- Package your seed securely. Use a small envelope or home-made packet that will not open accidentally
- Give as much, or more, seed than would be in a commercial packet of the same size. If the seed is large, rare or unusual, you may want to list the number of seeds enclosed
- On the package print the common name and the Latin name, because there are 10 unrelated plants called Firecracker Plant and because Ragged Robin is Centaurea to some, Lychnis to others. If you don't know the Latin name, there are many online resources to help you search by common name to determine the Latin (botanical) name.
- List the source: home gathered, commercial (give seed house), gift. Indicate the year it was gathered / purchased.
- Include your name and phone number if you like. Sometimes seed donators like to know how their gardens are spreading...
- Use a secure and robust seed envelope. Here are some ones you can make at home
